The vision of Kiwi Coast is one of thriving native forests and wildlife, nurtured and cared for by Northlanders. With wild kiwi leading the way, together we are creating New Zealand’s first modern day kiwi corridor.
Stretching across 291km of Northland, approximately, 280,000ha is now collectively under active conservation stewardship and sustained pest control.
Over 260 entities are now linked in to the Kiwi Coast. This includes community-led projects, hapū and iwi, forest management companies, government agencies, organisations, farmers and schools.
A key focus of Kiwi Coast is supporting the removal of introduced animal pests that defoliate forests, compete with native wildlife for resources, destroy nests, wetlands and forest floors and predate on vulnerable native species to the point of extinction.
Kiwi Coast works in collaborative partnerships with the shared vision of revitalizing Northland's people and places. Acknowledging Te Tiriti o Waitangi, respecting mātauranga Māori and working alongside mana whenua to support aspirations for regenerating te taiao are all central to Kiwi Coast.
Kiwi Coast Trust provides a platform of support to enable, link, and grow Northland community, hapū and iwi conservation groups and projects. Kiwi Coast Coordinators work on-the-ground with projects to build practical skills and connect individual pest control projects into cohesive networks. This creates collaborative landscape scale pest control that assists native wildlife to move safely across large distances and between discrete population patches – i.e. “kiwi corridors”. The Kiwi Coast Trust - Northland Regional Council Partnership Agreement enables the two entities to work together to sustain Northland's strong community, hapū and iwi led biodiversity restoration work and maximise opportunities for regional ecological success.
A key focus of Kiwi Coast is supporting the removal of introduced animal pests that defoliate forests, compete with native wildlife for resources, destroy nests, wetlands and forest floors and predate on vulnerable native species to the point of extinction. Each year, Kiwi Coast collates the trap catch data from all the projects involved to demonstrate the collective impact being achieved across Northland. On average, over 2,600 animal pests are now removed from Northland every week.
The Kiwi Coast Trust recognises the considerable community-led conservation work undertaken in Northland for over two decades. Working together under a broad, shared vision, Kiwi Coast aims to strategically multiply the effectiveness of existing efforts and maximise conservation gains.
