Welcome to Whiritoa Stream Trappers, Waipapa

Kiwi Coast welcomes the Whiritoa Stream Trappers from Waipapa – the 108th entity to link into the Kiwi Coast.

Landowner and group coordinator Karin Rae says “We are keen to join with Kiwi Coast and to look after our kiwi and other wild life in our catchment.

“We are seven properties covering just over 30 hectares, bordered on one side by Waipapa Road and Waipapa Stream on the other. The 1km Whiriwhiritoa Stream feeds into the Kerikeri Inlet of the Bay of Islands.

“Kiwi are frequently heard and have occasionally been seen on the property. We are all keen to trap stoats, weasels, rats and possums so that our kiwi can remain safe from predators.

“A stoat trap set just last week has already yielded results. “Stoats are the biggest enemy of baby kiwi and we are really pleased to take this one out of the environment”

Mid North Coordinator for Kiwi Coast Andrew Mentor has been helping to set up the group with predator traps.

He says “Adding traps to the area will begin to link up trap-lines over a landscape scale in the Bay of Islands area. Our plan is to eventually fill the gaps between groups which are all working hard to remove pests and protect our forests and wildlife.”

If you live in the Bay of Islands area and would like to get involved or start a community-led pest control group in your area just get in touch with Andrew.
