The Kiwi Coast is joining forces with pateke projects along Northland’s east coast!
Recent discoveries of new pateke/brown teal sites near Tutukaka suggest that similar to kiwi, pateke are also expanding along Northland’s east coast thanks to the hard work of community, agency and iwi-led conservation projects.
Pateke (Brown Teal) are considered to be one of the rarest ducks in the world.
Just like kiwi they are predated by feral cats, mustelids and dogs. Having evolved in the absence of these predators, the pateke’s natural response when confronted by an attacker is simply to freeze – they are literally a sitting duck!
The additional predator control resources brought into eastern Northland by the Kiwi Coast through the Reconnecting Northland programme will also help to boost pateke numbers and make their habitat safer.
