Nan Pullman from the Sandy Bay Kiwi Group on the Tutukaka Coast has reported seeing a barn owl when returning from kiwi listening last week.
The distinctive white face and silvery plumage made it instantly recognisable. These owls are considered to be NZ’s newest native bird, having arrived here naturally, and first recorded in the 1940s. In 2008 they were found breeding for the first time in NZ near Kaitaia.

It would be interesting to know if others have seen these distinctive owls in the Kiwi Coast. If you have seen a barn owl along the Kiwi Coast, please let us know: ngaire@kiwicoast.org.nz.
