Northland Kiwi Listening Survey 2022 Starts Next Thursday!

With the first Kiwi Listening Survey Window starting next Thursday on May 19th it’s been great to see people getting in touch with their listeners, downloading the app and getting ready.

This year, instead of carrying out in-person Kiwi Coast Listening App training sessions, we are creating resources to go online via the Kiwi Coast website. We are updating our info and building separate modules that you can point your listeners to from beginner ‘How To’ guides for the survey basics, all the way through to the latest advancements with the App.

We are just putting the finishing touches on the first modules now and these will go live next week.

Wendy  Ambury is also offering to make herself available for some online chat discussions if you have questions about how to do Kiwi Listening, use the app or something isn’t working quite right for you. Let us know if you would like us to set this up.

In terms of the app, we have a really exciting upgrade that is almost ready to go (we’re just waiting on Apple to accept it – should be any day now!). The mobile app update includes:

– Regular automated save points, so not all data is lost should a listener not ‘ finish’ the session before closing the app
– Kiwi Call Map, the listener will be able to:

  • see where the kiwi call is in relation to the station when adding a kiwi call using the bearing and distance
  • touch the map screen to place or move the kiwi call location (which then calculates the exact bearing and distance from the listening station)
At the same time we are launching a web based application as well which is designed to give listeners access to their data on their home PC and to be able to edit their session data retrospectively.

We will get more information out about this and other new features just as soon as Apple gives us the green light. It’s down to the wire, but we didn’t actually think we’d have this ready till next year. Thanks to a lot of hard work from Wendy and KiwiSprout though, it’s going to be ready this year, just in time (fingers crossed)!

In the meantime, remember that basic info, links to download the paper forms, and the link to the App are available on the Kiwi Coast website here: https://kiwicoast.org.nz/kiwi-listening-app/ and the two Kiwi Listening Survey 2022 window dates are up on our Events Calendar: https://kiwicoast.org.nz/events/

Lastly – if you need Kiwi Listening Devices to cover some of your sites, please get in touch ASAP with either Ngaire, Andy or Lesley so we can book these out to you and arrange delivery/pick up. We operate these on a first in-first served basis, so once all our KLDs are out, the waiting list system starts and we do our very best to ensure everyone has had a device out where needed by the end of the second window. DOC and NRC also have devices so other points of contact are Pete Graham or Rolf Fuchs at NRC or your local DOC office too.

Otherwise – happy listening and keep safe out there!
