Kiwi Coast has created a mobile app to take the hassle out of Northland’s Annual Kiwi Call Count Survey.
Kiwi Coast created the app in response to requests from groups and projects who were keen to move beyond pencil and paper. Groups had also reported the data entry required after completing kiwi listening each year to be a huge admin burden, taking up precious hours they’d rather spend out in the forest and checking traps. Kiwi Coast’s new app solves both these problems.
Kiwi Coast worked in with the Department of Conservation (DOC) and experienced Northland kiwi listeners to ensure the app mimics the official DOC ‘Kiwi Call Card’. The only difference is, instead of recording the info with pencil and paper, kiwi listeners can now use their phone to record all the required information while listening at their sites.
Additional features of the app include on-the-spot date and time stamps and automatic GPS location recording.
Listeners can also record kiwi calls on the spot – taking the uncertainty out of the odd calls sometimes heard – especially from juvenile kiwi finding their voices for the first time!
After completing a night’s listening, the data is summarised and can then be exported into the official DOC excel spreadsheet format for checking – no more laborious data entry!
Once checked, listeners can then email their data to their local Kiwi Call Count Coordinator for collation, then it’s submited to DOC for inclusion in the Annual Call Count Survey for Northland.
The App has been specifically designed for the Northland Kiwi Call Count Survey and is available free for groups and projects linked into Kiwi Coast.
App users need to be approved by an administrator before full access can be granted – be sure to fill out the form below!
