Mid North Year 5 Report

The Mid North area has now completed its fifth year of the NRC High Value Area (HVA) Program and continues to make significant progress towards achieving a connected pest control network across a large scale area in Northland.

Kiwi Coast Mid North Coordinator, Andrew Mentor says:
“It is my pleasure to present the completed Mid North HVA Year 5 report, for another busy and successful year of pest control, ecological restoration and kaitiakitanga in the Mid North.”

The report summarizes key activities, results and outcomes achieved from July 1 2022 – June 30 2023.  Highlights included:

  • The number of groups and projects involved in the Mid North HVA increasing to 68
  • A further 40,600 pests  trapped in 2022
  • The project has now trapped over 40,000 pests for four years in a row – 47,500, 40,200, 43,500 and 40,600 taking the total to 171,800
  • The release of 20 pāteke/brown teal, carried out in partnership with Ngātiwai Trust, Ngāti Torehina, the Landing, Pāteke Recovery Group and NRC.
The report includes a special section on the Pest Free Purerua Mataroa Project (PFP) that has dedicated additional funding from Save the Kiwi Jobs for Nature notes and Predator Free Pēwhairangi – both of whom were acknowledged for their support.
Andrew extended his thanks to all involved:
“Many thanks to the Mid North HVA Steering Group for their strategic direction, Northland Regional Council for the funding and all the hapū, groups, landowners, schools,  farmers, orchardists, companies and others who make up the Mid North. Together we are making a big difference.”
“There’s always much more to do and it’s a privilege to be working with you all and the community represented within the area. We look forward to the PF2050 project boosting the PFP project as we chase zero predators on the Purerua – Mataroa peninsula!”
