Kiwi Coast 2024 Annual Report Now Out!

The 2024 Kiwi Coast Annual Report, jam packed with the latest data and results, is now out!

The Kiwi Coast Trust has now provided 11 years of support to help boost community, hapū and iwi-led conservation success across Northland. Much has been achieved, with highlights including:

  • A further 34 groups and projects got underway and linked into Kiwi Coast, growing the regional network to 259 entities.
  • 30,510 hectares of active stewardship were added to the network, taking the total collective conservation management area to 281,510 hectares.
  • On average, in 2023 approximately 2,600 animal pests were trapped across the Kiwi Coast every week. This resulted in a record result of 136,646 animal pests removed in just one year!
  • The 11-year grand trap-catch tally now sits at 846,219 pests demonstrating the collective regional-scale impact being achieved
  •  28 skill-building workshops were held, taking the 11-year total to 149.
  • 4,538 people attended Kiwi Coast supported events and capacity-building workshops, taking the 11-year tally to 27,236.
  • A dedicated Bay of Islands Kiwi Rehabilitation Centre –  ‘Te Korowai Atawhai o Puketōtara – was opened in February 2024, and the first kiwi have already been successfully rehabilitated and released.
  • Specialist technical support was provided for a kiwi population survey on Moturoa Island, and the first translocation ever of kiwi from an island in the Bay of Islands back to the mainland.
  • Year 1 of a Northland bittern survey was completed as part of the collaborative ‘Matuku Mahi’ project
  • Wildlife monitoring results confirmed that populations of  taonga species such as kiwi and pāteke continued to increase where the full complement of long-term predator control and dog control was in place.

Together, as a collaborative network, with Kiwi Coast Trust offering a platform of support, an increasingly cohesive korowai of protection is being woven for Northland’s native forests and wildlife.

The Kiwi Coast Trust again thanks all the groups and projects for their enduring and relentless hard work. Many thanks also to our partners Northland Regional Council, principal funders Foundation North, Save the Kiwi Trust, generous donors, the keen ‘Follow a Kiwi’ fans, and Kiwi Rehab Centre sponsors. We are privileged to work with you all on this amazing initiative.
