The Kiwi Coast has now completed its 2016 Annual Report covering the third year of operation.
Highlights over the year have included:
- The number of projects, groups, iwi/hapu, forestry companies, agencies and organisations involved increasing to 71 – more than doubling the number participating in Year 1, and increasing the length of the Kiwi Coast to 195km
- The collective area under pest control management increasing to 120,295 ha
- Collated pest control results showing 113,000 animal pests were removed from the Kiwi Coast over the last 3 years with 52,000 animal pests removed in 2015 alone – that’s 1000 pests being removed from eastern Northland every week!
- The completion of the first ‘Kiwi Listening Blitz’, providing baseline kiwi distribution monitoring data that will allow changes in kiwi distribution to be measured every 5 years
- The completion of a ‘Kaka and Bellbird’ survey completing the indicator species monitoring framework
- Over 2000 people attending Kiwi Coast supported events and skill building workshops.
- The Kiwi Coast attracting its first local sponsor and beginning to generate independent funding via Kiwi Coast branded T-shirts, with a Social Enterprise idea ready for implementation once funding is secured.
The Kiwi Coast wishes to thank Reconnecting Northland, the Tindall Foundation and Foundation North for their ongoing support and partnership.
