KC 2015 Annual Report - cover (2)The 2015 Kiwi Coast Annual Report is now available.

The report covers the second year of implementation for the Kiwi Coast, from July 1 2014 – June 30 2015.

Kiwi Coast Coordinator, Ngaire Tyson says:

“The operation of the Kiwi Coast continues to be possible through both its partnership with the Reconnecting Northland programme and the unflagging determination of the people-on-the-ground working hard to ensure kiwi populations continue to slowly but steadily increase in eastern Northland”.

Highlights over the past 12 months have included:

  • Providing 509 new traps and resourcing professional trappers to reduce key kiwi predators in strategic areas
  • Increasing the number of community groups, projects, iwi/hapu, forestry companies, government agencies and organizations involved in the Kiwi Coast from 43 to 59.
  • Collating annual pest control resulting showing that collaboratively 36,040 animal pests were removed from eastern Northland in 2014
  • The total of area under active pest control along the Kiwi Coast reaching 78,425ha
  • 1,036 people attending events, workshops and kiwi experiences supported by the Kiwi Coast
  • Decreasing gaps between traplines of neighbouring projects to progress towards continuous trapping networks across multiple projects in key areas

The 2015 Annual Report also provides evidence that where good management is in place, kiwi populations are enjoying a slow and steady increase on the Kiwi Coast. This is especially good news for kiwi when compared to the national trend identified by the Kiwis for kiwi Trust of a 2% decline per annum in kiwi populations nationwide. As the Kiwi Coast is in its infancy, it does not seek to claim these results as its own success, but rather seeks to ensure the upward trend continues.
