First Kiwi Chicks Hatch

JR's kiwi chicks hatchThe first Northland brown kiwi chicks along the Kiwi Coast have hatched for the season at Whangarei Heads!

Todd Hamilton from Backyard Kiwi visited JR, a kiwi dad nesting up on Taurikura Ridge on Friday September 12. The chick timer on JR’s leg showed that after 83 days of nesting JR had hatched 2 chicks.

Helen Moodie from Backyard Kiwi says: ‘Thanks to this early nest it is highly likely that JR will nest again this season and produce more chicks – another kiwi dad doing his bit for the kiwi population at Whangarei Heads!”
