Kiwi Coast and DOC are working together to provide Kiwi Listening Training.
If you want to take part in this years Kiwi Call Count Survey and need help to confidently identify kiwi calls or fill out the Kiwi Call Count Survey Sheets correctly then you’ll find this evening very helpful. This years official listening ‘windows’ are May 7 – 26 and June 6 – 24.
The Kiwi Call Count is the best method we have to tell if kiwi populations are increasing or not.
If your group/project has a goal of kiwi recovery, then it is strongly recommended that you have a good array of kiwi listening sites in your project area and participate in the Kiwi Listening Survey every year.
What we will do: Rolf Fuchs from DOC will lead us into the Whangarei Kiwi Sanctuary where we should be able to hear male and female kiwi, and other night-calling birds that can be confused with kiwi. The main aim will be to learn to confidently identify kiwi calls. We will also take a look at the Kiwi Call Count Recording Sheets and go through how these should be filled out for your site.
