Over 40 projects along the Kiwi Coast are working hard to keep kiwi chicks safe in the wild.
Stoats kill 95% of kiwi chicks before they reach their first birthday. Kiwi projects along the Kiwi Coast work hard year round, checking stoat and other predator traps every 2 -3 weeks to give kiwi chicks a better chance of survival.
Most projects employ a professional trapper to do this crucial work, backed by strong local communities involved in possum and rat control, and who are good at tying up their dogs.
Less Stoats Means More Kiwis
With less stoats, and more kiwi chicks surviving, kiwi are on the increase along the Kiwi Coast. Some projects have even seen their kiwi numbers more than double over the last ten years.
