CONFIRMED: Kiwi have begun nesting!

Kiwi have begun nesting along the Kiwi Coast! Reports from trappers this week confirmed that several kiwi dad’s are now sitting on the first eggs for the season. The dad will now sit on the egg for about 80 days, only leaving  the nest briefly each night to feed.

Can you see the kiwi nest in this picture?

It is very hard to see as the kiwi carefully arrange sticks and leaves over the hole to conceal the nest from predators. Kiwi are very clever birds and this is just one of their cunning ways of keeping the nest safe.
