Bitten on the Brink?
Kiwi Coast is working with farmers, landowners, community groups, hapu, Department of Conservation, Northland Regional Council and the QEII National Trust to carry out bittern – matuku monitoring in 2023.
The aim is to work together to find out how many bittern we have left and what we can do to help boost their numbers back to a healthy and robust population.
From September – November 2023, acoustic monitors will be deployed at likely sites (such as wetlands and lakes) to investigate bitten presence by listening out for the booming of male bittern.
If you would like to get involved please contact Ngaire the Kiwi Coast Coordinator.
