North Hokianga Show

A great day of conservation and community engagement!

It was a busy day at the 110th North Hokianga A&P Show last Saturday, which enjoyed record attendance and strong community engagement. The Kiwi Coast crew had a great day connecting with keen locals, mostly from the Hokianga, as well as visitors from Kaiwaka, Cable Bay, and Rawhiti.

A traps stand to demonstrate different types of raised set traps, and a kiwi listening device attracted significant attention and a great opportunity to discuss pest control and conservation efforts.

Kiwi Coast Hokianga Coordinator Mae Lewis said:

“A kiwi listening device on a local farm in Broadwood recently confirmed kiwi presence in the area. It was great to be able to share this exciting news with the community, as talk about what the next steps are to protect these taonga.”

The team also connected with local pest controllers involved in groups supported by Kiwi Coast across Northland, sharing stories and discussing how they can continue to strengthen their efforts. Local school children also visited and were excited to report that they had already caught five possums in their new traps which were set up in the ngahere at their school as part of Kiwi Coast’s “Te Waka Kaitiaki” education in schools program.

Mae concluded:

“The show was a great opportunity to strengthen community connections, share conservation efforts, and build momentum for future kiwi protection initiatives. We can’t wait till next years show!”
