Kaikohe Kiwi!

The Kiwi Coast team were back in the community at the Kaikohe A&P Show over the weekend – meeting with keen pest controllers and receiving some exciting reports of kiwi calls.

Mae Lewis, Kiwi Coast Mid-West Coordinator said:

“It was great to have a steady stream of people coming up to talk about pest control projects – whether it was how to get started or expand what they were doing. If this is something you and your neighbours are interested in too, just get in touch and we’ll help you get your group underway.”

A particular highlight was hearing from locals in and around Ohaeawai, Kaikohe and Okaihau that they had heard kiwi calling!

This was exciting as many sites in the Kaikohe – Okaihau area have fallen silent over the years due to predators and roaming dogs.

A number of people were interested in putting out a kiwi listening device to see if kiwi could be heard where they are, and others were interested in trying new traps, or getting advice about setting traps off the ground to help keep kiwi safe.

This is great timing as Kiwi Coast’s third ‘Kiwi Listening Blitz’ is getting underway this year to find out if kiwi have continued to disperse across the region and return to places they have been lost.

Kiwi Coast Mid North Coordinator, Andrew Mentor said:

“If you’re keen to find out if kiwi have moved back into your area – let us know as we’d love to help”
