The first ever urban trapping group is up and running in the Far North, all thanks to a calling kiwi!
A trapping workshop was recently held at Coopers Beach for a newly formed urban trapping group. Forty-three people attended and were shown a range of traps available for rat and possum control.
Kiwi Coast Far North Coordinator, Lesley Baigent said: “This is the first urban trapping group for the Far North. It was started after a local resident heard a kiwi calling outside his window and decided to do something to help.
It is hoped that one day the pest control carried out by this group will link up with the trapping done by Mangonui School at Rangikapiti Pa, and also with the pest control done by Taipa Area School to form a strong protective network through the area.
The group has already made up rat boxes for locals. Bring back the birdsong!”
