Final preparations are underway to release 10 kiwi into Taheke Landcare’s predator controlled area this weekend!
Taheke Landcare invite you be part of this special event, that they have been working towards for almost a decade – clearing out the pests and building a community of committed dog owners, keen to help kiwi thrive once more. All are welcome to this family-friendly community-led event.
Over the next three years, 20 kiwi will be released to revitalise the local kiwi population that has dwindled down to the last one or two birds.
This event will be the first kiwi release for the area, and will involve a special ceremony to welcome the kiwi back to Tahere.
There will be an opportunity to meet the wild kiwi up close and see them as they are released into burrows within the predator controlled area managed by the Taheke Landcare.
Please arrive by 2.45pm so that the event can start on time and we can watch the kiwi go into their burrows before darkness falls.
Wear sturdy shoes if you wish to see the kiwi released into their burrows, as a short walk across farmland is necessary.
You may wish to bring a torch, but no dogs please.
