Did you know New Zealand has 126 species of lizard? And you won’t find our geckos and skinks anywhere else on the planet. Then there are our three native frog species, with features that make them distinctly unique….
In this fascinating and informative talk ecologist and specialist herpetologist Jacqui Wairepo will introduce us to some of the incredible native lizards and frogs found in Northland, the challenges they face, and the different ways we can find, monitor and protect them.
She’ll also encourage us to “think like a skink”: to look a little differently at the habitats around us, including the seemingly messy or degraded places that may still be providing important homes for native wildlife.
Speaker Jacqui Wairepo – a Waipu local – has more than 15 years’ experience in conservation research and ecological consultancy. She holds a Master of Science with First Class Honours in Conservation Biology and has worked throughout Aotearoa surveying, monitoring and protecting species, including leading numerous searches for Hochstetter’s frogs across Auckland and Northland. She is also the Secretary of the Society for Research on Amphibians and Reptiles in New Zealand.
