Northland's Nature Network... with wild kiwi leading the way

More about Kiwi Coast...

Pupurangi (Kauri Snail)

Once widespread through Northland, the kauri snail now has a limited distribution in parts of Northland and on a few offshore islands.

Wētā

Wētā are endemic to New Zealand. They are giant flightless crickets, and some are among the heaviest insects in the world.

Pūriri Moth

The pūriri moth is endemic to the North Island of New Zealand. It is New Zealand's largest moth, with a wingspan of up to 150 mm. It spends the first five to six years of its life as a grub in a tree trunk (common host plants are the pūriri tree.

Kiwi Coast supports and links community, hapū and iwi-led conservation projects together across Northland. With iconic kiwi as the ultimate inspiration, grassroots pest control groups are connected into a regional network, amplifying ecological gains. Collaborative pest control across the landscape creates corridors for wildlife to move safely, linking isolated populations. Together we are helping the native forests, wetlands and wildlife of Te Tai Tokerau to flourish into the future.

Follow a Kiwi Program

Become a kiwi sponsor - follow the real lives and adventures of wild Northland kiwi. Each kiwi is monitored remotely via a small leg-fitted radio transmitter so we can track it from a distance and is only handled twice a year for a health check and transmitter change. All sponsors receive monthly updates on each kiwis movement, activity, nesting attempts and adventures using data straight from the transmitter signals. Learn all about kiwi as you help them thrive and support Kiwi Coast.
